Abstract:

This theory-based and library-researched article attempts to read Edward Bond’s Lear through the Althusserian notions of ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses. Shakespeare and Bond are concerned with power in society and cultural ISAs as they manifest how repression and terrorization are applied by the characters through Apparatuses. The discussion is followed by the ideological discourse as a justification for repression. Then, the role of family as a domestic institution where the ruling as the present ideology is investigated. Lastly, the article is concerned with a counter-discourse in order to refute the ideological discourses the ruling class produces.
