Abstract:

The effect of chromium carbide size and distribution on the sliding wear of DIN-۵۵Cr۳ steel was investigated. To this end, the samples were austenitized at different temperatures of ۸۲۰ and ۸۵۰ °C. The pin-on-disk wear tests were conducted at the applied pressures of ۰.۵, ۱ and ۱.۵ MPa, under the constant sliding speed of ۰.۱۳ m/s for a sliding distance of ۱۰۰۰ m against a hardened AISI D۳ counter face. The obtained results showed that austenitizing of the samples at ۸۵۰ ℃, increased the sliding wear resistance by ۳۰, ۱۵ and ۱۰ times in the applied loads of ۰.۵, ۱ and ۱.۵ MPa, respectively. According to the results, this behavior can be attributed to the fine and even distribution of Cr۲۳C۶ particles in the tempered martensite matrix. The presence of these carbides increased the hardness and the ability of the subsurface layers in supporting of the tribolayer formed over the sliding surface.
