Abstract:

Wind is known as an unlimited energy. To use wind for electric energy, we need equipment such as turbines. One of the most important issues in the design of wind farms is the protection of wind turbine equipment against direct and indirect lightning strikes. In this paper, using the EMTP-RV software, the most up-to-date high-frequency model of wind turbine, lightning and earth system equipment is provided. The earth system plays a significant role in reducing the surge voltage when striking a lightning strike into an air turbine. To reduce the overvoltage on a turbine that is hit by a lightning strike, several models of earth system integration, such as star, triangular, circular, three breaks and, etc are tested. And further, considering the different conditions, the optimal integration of the earth system for turbines in wind farms is introduced. At the end of the lightning wave, two standardized voltages and current are applied to the wind turbine. Using the MATLAB software and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), surplus voltages created by applying two waves are compared in different parts of the wind turbine
