Evaluation of mothers' sense of coherence and children dental caries relationships in Tehran city

The oral diseases including dental caries are one of the most common diseases among children can lead to lots of problems such as undesirable appearance, sleep disorder, inadequate nutrition. Recent studies demonstrated a sense of parental solidarity is considered as a valuable and important role in children’s ‘oral health. Regarding to important role of mothers' sense of coherence, the aim of this study is to determine the correlation between dental caries status in young teen (۱۰-۱۵ years of age) and their mothers' sense of coherence in Tehran city. One hundred student mother pairs were participated into the descriptive correlation study by simple random sampling selected four schools from ۱۰ schools. The data were obtained through using a maternal-child demographic-health information questionnaires and the mothers' sense of coherence ۱۰ scale. Dental examinations were performed on children by two specialists and the data were classified accordingly using decay index, missing and filled teeth (dmft primary teeth, DMFT permanent teeth) for both groups and recorded in the dental examination checklist. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients and Poisson regression analyses were also used to examine the relationships between variables. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version ۱۹.The means of standard deviation value for primary and permanent teeth were ۳.۴۳ (۳.۰۹) and ۲.۶۸ (۲.۸۹) respectively. The means of standard deviation value for mothers' sense of coherence was ۶۶.۹۲. The Poisson regression analyses revealed the more increasing mothers’ sense of coherence, the less prevalence of dental caries for primary and permanent teeth in children.The oral health plans for children with higher risk of dental caries could be improved through increasing mothers' sense of coherence.
