Abstract:
The aim of this study is to evaluate existing speed-density models for pedestrians at different types of crosswalks and propose alterative model. Tow signalized crosswalks and seven sidewalks including sidewalks near subway stations were observed. Data of ۳۱۰۰ pedestrians at signalized crosswalks, ۹۱۵ at sidewalks nearby subway stations and ۱۳۰۹ pedestrians at other sidewalks and parameters including gender, position of walking, density and walking speed were collected. Effect of other parameters on pedestrian walking speed including length of crosswalk and activity of shopping centers were evaluated at signalized crosswalks. Based on type of crosswalk, effect of density on pedestrian walking speed is not the same and a comparison have been made between different crosswalks based on gender. Former proposed models are evaluated to explain collected data including HCM relation for calculation of average walking speed which showed poor results. An alternative quadratic model (Sarkar and Sadeghi model) was proposed for pedestrian speed-density and showed better results than previous models.
