Abstract:

Damage caused by past earthquakes indicates the vulnerability of bridges to earthquakes. The consequences of this issue are not limited to human and economic loss during an earthquake but expanded to bridges’ role in relief and connection after the earthquake. Highways in an area can be thought of as a collection of roads and bridges. Whenever a member of this group is injured, and out of service, part of the network is disrupted. The purpose of this study is the performance evaluation of a two-span concrete highway bridge, according to performance-based earthquake engineering philosophy. Uncertainties in seismic demand and structural capacity highlight the need for possible tools for this assessment. Hence, in this study, fragility curves are applied, which depict the probability of exceeding predefined damage states as a function of a ground motion parameter.
