Abstract:

Aerodynamic performance prediction of vertical axis wind turbines with implementation of BEM formulation, relies on the blade section aerodynamic coefficients data. As the data directly influences the prediction reliability, double precision should be utilized while selecting it. The usual sources in which the data could be found, are the research works dedicated to experimentally determine these aerodynamic coefficients over different values of angle of incidence and Reynolds number. On the other hand, in some cases, the experimental data is not convenient or available at all. In these occasions, some alternatives may be taken into consideration. The current research work aims to compare the solution for flow around the vertical axis wind turbine’s blade obtained by XFOIL software with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results demonstrate that the purposed CFD approach has a more accurate estimation than XFOIL software and the results are in agreement with the previously validated experimental data
