Abstract:

Translation is an activity comprising the interpretation of the meaning of a text in one language to the other language (Gao, ۲۰۱۰). According to Yarmohammadi (۲۰۱۰), an ideal translation is the one that is not recognized as translation by anyone. In other words, the translated text should be thought as it was originally written in the target language. Unfortunately, many translated texts in Iran have lost their meaning and in some cases the meaning of the main message in the source language has been omitted. Against this background, this study aims to shed light on the problems students face when translating from Persian to English. In order to find out the main problems faced by students in translating from Persian to English, Na Pham's (۲۰۰۵) error analysis was conducted which takes into account linguistic translation errors. ۳۰ students (English Language Translation) were selected through purposive sampling. Translations from Persian into English were carried out for data collection. All the students' translations were analyzed to investigate the linguistic problems in translating literary texts. Moreover, ۳ lecturers were interviewed to find out the causes of students' translation errors. It was found that the participants had syntactic errors in their translations. It is hoped that this study will provide a new perspective for the objective evaluation of some translation devices and instructions for university lecturers by considering the linguistic aspects.
