Abstract:

This study has attempted to investigate the relationship among reading interests, mind wandering, and reading comprehension skill of EFL learners at upper intermediatelevel. In order to conduct this study, ۹۰ upper-intermediate level EFL learners studying at three language institutes in Karaj and Tehran were selected. There were four maininstruments in this study: the Quick Oxford Placement Test (OPT) as the homogeneity test, the Mind-Wandering Questionnaire (MWQ) by Mrazek, Phillips, Franklin, Broadway, and Schooler (۲۰۱۳), Reading Interests Scale (RIS) by Dokmen (۱۹۹۴), and a reading comprehension test. After assuring their level of proficiency, the two questionnaires were given to the learners. In the end, they took the reading comprehension test. By adhering to a correlational design, the analysis of the collected data reveals that there is a correlation between reading comprehension skill and reading interest; in other words, reading comprehension scores increase as learners’ reading interests improve. Also, there is a negative correlation between reading comprehension skill and mindwandering since reading comprehension scores increase as learners’ mind-wandering decreases.
