Abstract:

Using psychoanalytic criticism as the framework of the study, this essay will examine the ways in which dreaming functions as a mirror reflecting all the ups and downs of the life of an individual through abstract illusions. To that end, this paper inspects the ways in which the mind processes dreams. Dream interpretation, Self-Organization Theory and the contents of a dream including the latent contents and the manifest contents are among the subjects that will be discussed in this article analyzing Inside Out animation. This study concentrates on Riley, the protagonist of the story, who is going through a climatic time in her life. Riley’s emotional and psychological balance depends on what is symbolized in her mind as personality islands, and like all individuals, Riley, has a number of defences operating in different manners in order to maintain that balance during the catastrophic time of her life as a teenager. Knowing that when we are asleep, according to Freudian psychoanalysis, our defence mechanisms do not operate in the same manner as they do when we are awake, Riley’s dreams are open to interpretation based on the defence mechanisms introduced by Freud and Lacan. What the animation demonstrates is the manifest content of the dream, but “what these images actually mean is the dream’s latent content and that is a matter of interpretation” (Tyson, ۲۰۰۶). A deeper insight into Riley’s mind indicates that she is suffering from a number of core issues such as Fear of Intimacy and Fear of Abandonment which clarify the reasons behind Riley’s nightmares.
