Morphological Productivity of Derivational Prefixes in Persian

The present paper addresses the phenomenon of productivity in derivational morphology from the point of view of its quantification. This research studies the derivational prefixes. The most important components involved in word formation are derivational affixes. A derivation process leads to the production of a new word. This process has been of interest to linguistics for many years. When studying the derivational process, it is important to check the productivity of a derivational prefix. This study investigates the productivity of five derivational prefixes used to create new words in Persian language. We examine productivity synchronically within the register of stories texts. To conduct this study, five Persian prefixes were selected, defined, and then categorized based on a descriptive and analytical method. The results show that phonological and syntactic constraints have a significant effect in productivity, also the highest productivity belongs to / bi, na, ba, por/ while the least belongs to / kam & àbr.
