Abstract:
Background and aim: Biological synthesize offers a safe and environmentally friendly method for the production of nanoparticles compared to chemical methods. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial effect of biologically produced bismuth oxide nanoparticles on representatives of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Material & Methods: In this study, bismuth oxide nanoparticles were produced from the cell lysis supernatant of Vibrio sp. VLC strain using ۱۰ mM of Bi(NO۳)۳.۵H۲O salt. Biogenic bismuth nanoparticles were then characterized by XRD, FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and finally their antibacterial effect on E. coli PTCC ۱۸۶۰ and S. aureus ATCC ۲۵۹۲۳ (Gram-negative and Gram-positive, respectively) was investigated using broth microdilution method. Results: Bi۲O۳ nanoparticles were biosynthesized in powder form. MIC of Bi۲O۳ NPs for E. coli and S. aureus were reported۳.۹ μg/mL and ۷.۸۱ μg/mL, respectively and MBC value for E. coli was ۷.۸۱ μg/mL and ۱۵.۶۲ μg/mL for S. aureus. Conclusions: Our results showed that bacteriogenic bismuth oxide nanoparticles in low concentrations can inhibit pathogenic bacteria, therefore they can be considered promising microbial nanomaterials.Key words:Bismuth oxide (Bi۲O۳) nanoparticles, Vibrio
