Abstract:

A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polarizing film containing TiO۲ nanoparticles was prepared by casting solvent method. TiO۲ nanoparticles have been synthesized by using the precursor TiCl۳ and ammonium hydroxide (NH۴OH) as precipitants. The effect of various concentration of NH۴OH and the basic components of PVA-film (ethanol and PVA) on the synthesis of TiO۲ nanoparticles were investigated. UV-Vis spectra of obtained TiO۲ nanoparticles show the maximum absorption of TiO۲ nanoparticles does not change (~۲۵۵ nm). Transmission spectra and calculated polarizing efficiency of PVA-film colored by Congo Red and containing TiO۲ nanoparticles was shown virtually identical in form and intensity with colored PVAfilm without TiO۲ nanoparticles. Consequently, TiO۲ nanoparticles do not interfere with the formation of the PVA-film and does not affect its optical and dichroic properties. Therefore, they can be used to improve other properties of colored PVAfilms such as light and thermal stability and heat conductivity without decrease transparency and polarizing ability
