Abstract:

The unsteady open-channel flow equations are typically expressed in a variety of forms due to the imposition of differing assumptions, use of varied dependent variables, and inclusion of different source/sink terms. Questions often arise as to whether a particular equation set is expressed in a form consistent with the conservation-law definition. This paper intends to investigate the impact of dependent variable selection on results obtained using a numerical scheme so called Specified-Time-Interval (STI) scheme. The numerical experiment involves compareing the solution of steady and unsteady open channel flow for various choice of dependent variable and demonstrates that the choice of dependent variable is the fundamental factor determining the nature of the conservation properties of any particular equation form and the results are very consistent with previous findings [1].
