Abstract:

The effect of soil flexibility on the dynamic properties of structures is investigated by employing a simplified soil-structure model. The structure is replaced with a single degree of freedom model connected to the foundation which is modeled as a lumped mass. The soil is also replaced with generalized sway and rocking springs using the concept of Cone Models. The dynamic properties of the system are then evaluated through parametric cigenvalue analysis. The results are compared with current seismic code provisions
