Abstract:

The Earthquake Disaster Risk Index (EDRI) is a composite index that attempts to allow comparison of the relative overall risk of an earthquake causing a disaster in cities in a region or worldwide, and describes the relative contributions of various factors to that overall risk. A preliminary EDRI has been compiled and an evaluation begun for twenty-one (۲۱) cities in the regions of Central Asia. the Near East and the Caspian Sea. Data for the EDRI for all ۲۱ cities were collected from sources published in English, and then the results for the six Central Asian and Caucasian cities of Baku (Azerbaijan),Yerevan (Armenia), Tblisi (Georgia). Almaty (Kazakhstan), Bishkek (Kyrgistan) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) wore evaluated by on-site observation. By publishing these preliminary results, the authors hope to receive comments that will lead to improvement of the EDRI and its eventual application to earthquake risk management
