Abstract:

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers with unique properties are becoming increasingly crucial as precursors for the fabrication of carbon fibers. Here, we recommend providing PAN fiber to improve the homogeneity and thermal stability of the fibers. Adding a prearranged amount of water (۴ vol.%) as nonsolvent to the PAN solution, followed by wet spinning, has prepared precursor fiber with high thermal properties and unique graphitic order. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results illustrate that PAN/H۲O precursor fiber has higher thermal decomposition temperature, enhanced residual weight, and diminished heat release rate, a promising precursor for the evolution of high-performance composite fibers.
