Abstract:

Background: Colonoscopy screening can detect colon malignancies in the early stages and reduce mortality. Due to the pain of colonoscopy, often use sedatives and analgesics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combination Oxycodone and Mebeverine on reducing pain and making the acceptable colonoscopy. Materials & Methods: We performed a double-blind randomized clinical trial in individuals who were to undergo screening colonoscopy, so that the patients were divided into two groups. ۱۲۵ patients were randomly allocated to receive ۱۵ mg oxycodone and ۱۷۰ mg Mebeverine or placebo before colonoscopy. Subjects were compared in terms of pain, spasm and ease of colonoscopy. Quality criteria for colonoscopy such as time to reach the cecum and total duration of colonoscopy were evaluated. Results: Comparison of pain between case (۶۱ case with mean age ۴۵) and control groups (۶۴ case with mean age ۴۲) showed a statistically significant difference (P < ۰.۰۰۱). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of severity of peristalsis (P = ۰.۴۱). The mean time to reach the cecal region was significantly less in the case group (P <۰.۰۰۱). The mean total duration of the procedure was ۱۹.۴۹ ± ۴.۲۹ minutes in the case group and ۲۰.۳۸ ± ۴.۶۸ minutes in the control group, which was significantly lower in the case group (P = ۰.۰۰۱).Conclusion: Our study showed that combination Oxycodone and Mebeverine reduces patients' pain and duration of the procedure and facilitates colonoscopy and increases patient satisfaction.
