Abstract:

Plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites with interesting biological activites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical activity of methanolic extract of (flowers, leaves and roots) of Rheum ribes L. belonging to the family Polygonaceae. The flowers, leaves and roots of Rheum ribes L. were collected from Tonekabon, Iran and methanolic extract prepared by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) method. Then total flavonoids and total phenolic content of methanolic extracts were determined by the Aluminium Chloride Colorimetric and Folin-Ciocalteau method, respectivly. Also, In vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts were assayed by DPPH۰ free radical scavenging assay. In vitro qualitative analysis, were tested in methanolic extracts according with standard protocols. Our data showed total phenolic content of methanolic extracts of Rheum ribes L. flowers, leaves and roots were ۸۴±۰.۱, ۷۹±۰.۳, ۷۲±۰.۵ mg GAE/g dry plant material. Also, total flavonoid content of methanolic extracts of Rheum ribes L. flowers, leaves and roots were ۶۵±۰.۲, ۵۷±۰.۵, ۴۹±۰.۸ QE/g dry plant material. The value IC۵۰ of methanolic extract of Rheum ribes L. flowers, leaves and roots determined ۷.۲۶, ۶.۸۷ and ۶.۵۳ mg/ml. The present investigation shows that significant variation in the contents like alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols and etc when compared to the abovementioned results. Regarding to phytochemical and antioxidant results, Rheum ribes L. from Tonekabon can be considered as a new natural drug in future, while more studies needed. According to their characteristics, they can be involved into medicinal plant category.
