Abstract:
Pulse width in Blumlein pulse generators is inevitably limited by the length of pulse forming line. A two-stage repetitive Blumlein pulse generator with variable pulse width isproposed in this paper. Adjustable pulse width is implemented by a controller circuit which is evidently deals with Blumlein’s switches and fulfills the repetitive pulse across the load. The minimum obtainable pulse width is determined by switch closing time which is the sum of its turn-on delay and rise time. In order to gain complete power transfer, a matched load of 200 Ohms is used. A pulse width between 100ns and 600ns is developed across the load which could be defined by the switch trigger command. Pulse amplitudes about 1 kV is obtainable, but higher pulse amplitudes are also achievable by higher range of supply and switch supportable voltage, however high instantaneous currents may occur that should particularly be regarded. One application for such a device is in the field of bioelectric, where nanosecond pulses with voltages of up to 1 kV are required to perform studies on living biological cells under the microscope. Variable pulse width allows variable energy level discharged into the load
