An assessment of adaptive re-use impact on adjacent neighborhoods social, environmental, economic and tourism aspects: a case study

One of the important contributions that historical buildings can make to the communities in which they are sited, is their possibility for reuse once their beneficial life has come to an end, which is applicable by adaptive reuse. According to the many advantages that a building’s adaptive reuse causes, the present paper contains two studies to further enlighten adaptive reuse’s importance; firstly the paper investigates the effects of adaptive reuse of Rastgar monument in Tabriz, Iran in terms of economic, social, environmental and tourism, as well as the effect of involvement of people living in the adjacent neighborhoods on their satisfaction by analyzing the correlation between the factors. The second study focuses on the historical elements of the building through field study with regard to its functionality over the time and in-depth investigation of its renovation and preservation. The results enlighten the method of construction in terms of physical transformations and other transitions made according to function of the building. In conclusion, although the advantaged of adaptive reuse are known, the outcomes of the current paper demonstrate that the type of use adopted for the building can change the results and reduce some of the positive effects of adaptive reuse
