Abstract:

Appropriate serum levels of vitamin D are necessary to maintain the normal bone metabolism. Low vitamin D status is associated with low bone mass which, in turn, is an important predictor of fracture. The aim of this study was evaluation of relationship between Vitamin D and femur bone mineral density in active older men. Sixty seven active older men with an average age of ۷۴ years with medical records and clinical trials were selected at Milad Hospital in Tehran. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to find the relationship between vitamin D and left femur (neck, shaft, trochanter, Ward's triangle and Total) mineral density of active men. SPSS software version ۲۶ was used for data analysis. There was a positive correlation between vitamin D left femur neck and shaft, (P ≤ ۰.۰۵). The associations of vitamin D with left femur trochanter and Ward's triangle bone mineral density were not statistically significant. Our study suggested that in the elderly population, the serum ۲۵- hydroxyl vitamin D [۲۵(OH) D] concentration is often inadequate. This may cause a lower bone mineral density (BMD), which is an important predictor of fracture.
