Abstract:

One of the conventional methods to develop biodegradable plastics is manufacturing the blend of polyolefin and starch. Recent studies have focused on starch-based biodegradable blends. Nowadays polymer blends containing starch have a growing interest in packaging industry to reduce the environmental pollution by plastic wastes. In this study, polypropylene/ thermoplastic starch (PP/TPS) blends with different composition of TPS (100/0, 90/10, 70/30, 50/50), in the presence of 6 wt.% Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) copolymer as a coupling agent, were prepared using twin screw extruder. The mechanical properties and phase morphology of blends were investigated. The mechanical properties of tensile strength and Young’s modulus increased by increasing the starch content but elongation at break decreased. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used for the investigation of the particle distribution and phase morphology. According to the SEM images, the size of starch particles do not show any changes when starch content increases. This evidence shows that EVA could be a suitable coupling agent between PP and TPS. Coupling agent results in decreasing the interfacial tension between immiscible phases and improving the miscibility.
