Abstract:

The talk will present novel results concerningthe synthesis, processing and characterization of highly filled nanocomposites based on polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and soft magnetic Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were synthesized in an aqueous co-precipitation reaction and show a single particle diameter of approximately 15nm. The particles were covered by PVB in a spray drying process. The synthesized compound particles were further processed by micro injection molding to test specimens.Filler contents up to 14.5 vol.-% were synthesized and processed. The distribution of the nanoparticles was characterized using TEM micrograph. Besides a minor number of agglomerates and aggregates the nanoparticles are distributed homogeneously in the polymer matrix.Furthermore, the injection molded specimens were characterized regarding to their mechanical and magnetic properties as well as their polymer structure. Storage modulusand magnetic permeability were improved significantly by adding nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles shows significant influence on the degradation behavior and glass transition temperature of PVB. The results were discussed with previous experiments examined with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as polymer matrix [1, 2].
