Facile One-Pot Domino Synthesis of ۳,۴-Dihydropyrimidin-۲(۱H)-one Derivatives by Three-Component Reaction in Water

A three-component reaction of arylglyoxal monohydrates, enaminoketones, and potassium cyanate takes place at room temperature in water as a green solvent under the catalysis of FeBr۳ as an inexpensive and green catalyst, giving ۳,۴-dihydropyrimidin-۲(۱H)-one derivatives in good to excellent yields. A number of functionalized arylglyoxal monohydrates and enaminoketones were compatible with these conditions, and the products were separated by column chromatography (silica gel, n-hexane-ethyl acetate, ۵:۱). All compounds were characterized using the NMR and IR spectral and analytical data.
