Abstract:

Introduction: The second most common cancer in men after lung cancer is Prostate Cancer (PC). Previous studies have assessed the association between food items or food groups with the risk of PC but Diet quality indices are unique approach to studying relations between diet and disease. Our objective was to investigate the effect of healthy eating index (HEI-۲۰۱۰) and Mediterranean-Style Dietary Pattern Score (MSDPS) on PC risk. Methods: We recruited ۹۷ subjects with MS and ۲۰۵ control subjects in a case-control study. Dietary intake was collected using a valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire. The HEI and MSDPS were calculated. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between HEI and MSDP scores and PC, after adjustment for confounders. Results: In comparison to controls, cases had lower score of total HEI (۶۱ vs. ۷۰.۰۷; P< ۰.۰۰۱), and higher score of MSDP (۲۶.۲۰ vs. ۲۴.۴۹; P= ۰.۴۴). When comparing the highest and the lowest tertile of HEI, we observed a significant decreasing trend in the risk of PC (p for trend<۰.۰۰۱). Conclusions: Our study suggests that a high quality diet assessed by HEI may decrease the risk of PC.
