Abstract:

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with low toxicity are environmental friendly and have excellent properties, such as large specific surface area, high porosity, superhydrophobicity, and hydrothermal stability. Despite different applications, i.e., sensing, molecular sieves, and drug delivery, the anti-corrosion behavior of the MOFs specially ZIF family has been less studied. ZIFs are promising candidates for inhibitor delivery and that may attain higher efficacy long-lasting corrosion protection. Interestingly the concept can be used to load other specifc molecules that bring certain functionalities into coatings. The use of smart nanocarriers for the storage of functional species responsible for corrosion inhibition or self-healing is an challenging research stream. This article provides an overview of the most important aspects and characteristics of MOFs as inhibitor carriers.
