Population structure, growth and reproduction properties of barbel (Barbus plebejus Bonaparte, ۱۸۳۲) living in Çığlı stream, Van, Turkey

This study was carried out to determine population structure, growth and reproduction properties of barbel. A total of ۱۹۸ individuals were sampled. Ages of samples were found between I and VI years, fork lengths between ۴.۳ and ۱۶.۶ cm and total weights between ۱.۲ and ۶۵.۸ g. Length-weight relationship was calculated as W=۰.۰۱۴۶×L۲.۹۳۴. Munro’s phi prime index was estimated as ۱.۹۵, L∞ as ۲۶.۴۲ cm W∞ as ۲۱۶.۹۲ g, and condition factor as ۱.۲۶۵±۰.۰۱. First sexual maturation was determined in ۶.۰-۶.۹ cm-group males, and second sexual maturity was recorded in ۱۰.۰-۱۰.۹ cm-group females. Individual fecundity was defined between ۵۶۸ and ۴۱۷۱ eggs/female and relative fecundity was calculated as ۶۴۹۶۴.۵۵±۵۸۵۵.۴۹ eggs/kg female. Barbel did not show good growth and reproduction performance in the stream, because of fishing pressure.
