Abstract:

Transportation infrastructure is a crucial component of a country’s economy, development, security, and welfare. More effective and efficient technologies and techniques are needed to create, change, and develop transportation infrastructure to keep pace with population growth. Also, in connection with the development of society and the intensification of international relations, the importance of transportation as a factor for economic and social development has increased. The advent of building information modeling and the tremendous impacts on implementing many construction projects worldwide have revolutionized the construction industry in many countries. Using this technology in some countries is considered one of the main requirements in implementing construction projects. Hence, to address the significance of BIM in the construction industry, a comprehensive literature review has been conducted. In the first steps, we discuss and introduce the high sensitivity, challenges and obstacles, applications and, limitations of the transportation infrastructures in the world; moreover, the comprehensive and integrated literature review based on successful experiences and advantages of BIM in the transportation infrastructures of developed countries such as Finland, England, and Australia have conducted. To recapitulate, it is clear that given the actions done in numerous projects in developing and developed countries, Iran’s construction industry, precisely the transportation infrastructure field, needs to develop a BIM vision and strategic plan to take advantage of this emerging technology.
