Abstract:

As a result of Industrial Revolution in England and the emergence of English as the language of the coloniser, English was officially introduced to India in the ۱۹th century. However, the serious development of this language in the subcontinent is dated to the time of the establishment of Universities at Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras in ۱۸۵۷. During this time, English served both the coloniser and the colonised – for the coloniser it was a benefit to meet its formidable intentions and it was utilised by the colonised as the medium of anti-colonial discourse for the emancipation of their country. The Indians used it to promote their education in foreign terrain. Besides the historical role of English in India in the form of formal education, it is the spoken tongue of about ۹۰ million people in the country. Meanwhile English has provided the people with access to the latest developments of science and technology. Making Covid-۱۹ vaccine reflects such an access. Today, the advanced use of English, in domestic and international markets has helped the Indian business man and student to compete successfully in the spheres of finance and economy globally. The use and command of English has facilitated effective communication for foreign investment. India, thereby providing people with job opportunities in the corporate houses – this sector blends international and national companies.
