Abstract:
In the present study, a three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to explore hydraulics of compound open-channel with narrowing floodplain. Specifically, the simulations are employed to determine the free surface profiles, depth averaged velocity distribution, discharge ratio and momentum balance in compound channels with symmetrically narrowing floodplains. As verification, the results of simulations are compared with the experimental data in a ۱۰ m long and ۱.۲۰ m wide flume using depth averaged velocity, free surface profiles and main channel and floodplain discharge ratio. Also, the three-dimensional numerical models are used to evaluate the momentum flux terms in whole length of the channel. The results show that the momentum transfer associated with the mass transfer is significant in the simulations which shows the dominant effect of convection and pressure terms
