Abstract:

Crude oil based cutting fluids threat the workers' health and the environment due to the production of toxic gases during machining operation and the lack of natural decomposition in the environment and their pollution. Vegetable oils as lubricants have many advantages and can be an excellent option to replace petroleum based oils in cutting fluid. In this research, the feasibility of replacing ۱۱ common types of vegetable base oils as lubricants in the cutting fluid of turning operation were studied. By applying the decision matrix method and TOPSIS algorithm, the most suitable oil to use in cutting fluid with superior properties was identified. This study identified castor oil as the best oil to replace cutting oils in machining fluids. The confirmatory experiments were performed using castor oil as a lubricant in the cutting fluid to confirm theoretical analysis results. The results of cutting force tests show the optimal performance of this oil with an average of ۱۳.۴۱% reduction in cutting force compared to theuse of Z۱ oil.
