Abstract:

Purpose: Psychological factors including emotional distress can lead to chronic pain development and maintenance following musculoskeletal injuries. The traumatic injuries distress scale (TIDS) is used to evaluate the level of emotional distress after musculoskeletal injuries of any kind. The purpose of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the TIDS to Persian and also evaluate its psychometric properties in a Persian population. Methods: The forward-backward translation technique was adopted for the translation phase of the study. Cognitive interviews were conducted to assess the lingual accuracy and cultural appropriateness. Structural validity, criterion validity, and internal consistency, of the Persian version of the TIDS (TIDS-P) were assessed. Results: At the cross-cultural adaptation phase of the study, some issues were identified that were related to interpretation and application of the items that were resolved through rewording and recalibration of the tool. ۱۰۰ participants (mean age ۳۲.۵, ۸۲% male) completed the TIDS-P. The TIDS-P demonstrated excellent criterion validity (r=۰.۷۳, ۰.۵۶) Appropriate statistical criteria was demonstrated for the three-factor structure of TIDS-P. The internal consistency was accepWDEOH ZLWK &URQEDFKʼV DOSKD RI ۰.۶۱ for the hyperarousal/intrusion subscale, ۰.۸۳ for the negative affect subscale, and ۰.۷۸ for the uncontrolled pain subscale. Conclusion: The TIDS-P can be used in Persian patient populations that have suffered musculoskeletal injuries to assess their emotional distress. The psychometric properties of the TIDS-P are adequate and appropriate. The TIDS-P can be a valuable addition to the toolbox of clinicians for assessing the risk of developing chronic pain.
