Abstract:

Background/Aims: Following musculoskeletal injuries, patients often experience a good pattern of recovery. However, some continue to experience negative outcomes for a long time. In this study, we explored the association between satisfaction with recovery and demographic information in people with non-catastrophic musculoskeletal trauma. Methods: Participants with acute musculoskeletal injuries of any aetiology were recruited from an orthopaedic clinic. The Satisfaction and Recovery Index (SRI) was used to assess the patients’ satisfaction with their recovery. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between SRI scores and continuous variables. One-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test were used to assess whether there were any differences in SRI scores between other study variables. A multivariable linear regression model was created to assess factors independently associated with SRI scores for which all variables with P < ۰.۱۰ from the bivariate analysis were included.Findings: In total, ۱۰۰ participants with mean age of ۳۲.۵ were recruited. There was no association between SRI scores and age (r=۰.۱۳, P=۰.۲۱), sex (F=۰.۹۴, P=۰.۲۲), education (F=۱.۰۷, P=۰.۳۰), number of people living with the patients (r=۰.۰۵, P=۰.۶۰), marital status (F=۰.۲۰, P=۰.۸۷), type of injury (F=۰.۵۳, P=۰.۶۷), injured body part (F=۱.۹۱, P=۰.۱۷), mechanism of injury (F=۰.۶۲ , P=۰.۶۰), job(F=۰.۴۷ , P=۰.۷۰), time since injury (r=۰.۰۳ , P=۰.۷۳).Conclusions: Demographic variables and baseline characteristics are not associated with the level of satisfaction with recovery following non-catastrophic musculoskeletal trauma. Clinicians can use these findings to rule out these variables as contributors to low (or high) satisfaction with recovery. Future studies need to assess the contribution of other probable and relevant psychological and social characteristics.
