Abstract:

Background: Injuries and specially traffic accidents are so important as causes of death ,disability, hospital expenses, economic damage to the society which World Health Organization selected them as the main subjects for discussion and research. In this study we have done an epidemiologic study about trauma in Guilan (north of Iran). Method and Material : This is a cross-sectional study was done on 3462 trauma patients whom admitted in Poursina Hospital during September 2005 July 2006 . Data were collected at the time of enrollment including of demographic information , mechanism of trauma ,part of body injuries according to AIS90 and severity of head trauma according to Glascow coma scale .All of information analyzed using SPSS 13. Result : Overall 3462 trauma patients admitted .Mean age was 31.86 years with male to female ratio about 3.5:1.Most of patients were young (18 45 - y).Traffic accidents were the leading cause of injuries (72.58% ( and then fall (16.66%) .About 64% of patients whom involved in accidents were young Motorcycle riders were the most injured group (% 47,35 ) after that car passengers and drivers (26.7%).Traffic accidents happen in men significantly more than women (p=0.001) and Traffic accidents showed progressive trend to the midnight. Forty six percent of patients transported to hospital by people or came themselves. . Head and neck were the most common injured part of body (82.38%) however about in 82 % of patients were mild and then limb & pelvic(22.15%) . Finally about 1.7% of them died ude to severity of injuries. Conclusion: Nowadays , trauma patients are mainly motorcycle riders and car passengers . They suffer generally from head injury and fracture of extremities .It shows we should pay more attention to traffic safety and emergency management in this time and we must try to make aware people ,mostly the drivers ,of all possible preventive measures .
