Abstract:

Horizontal drilling is one of the most important technological advances in oil industry. Although the cost of horizontal wells surpassed the production improvement in early stages, improvement in associated tools and techniques has reduced the cost significantly. Nowadays economical consideration and production trends of horizontal wells have made them a popular method of field development.Even though several drilling issues regarding to horizontal well have been resolved, there exist some problem which could not be solved completely yet. Maintaining appropriate well bore cleaning and applying sufficient weight on bit have been the most important limiting factors in drilling deep horizontal well bores. These issues will normally lead to slow rate of penetration and high nonproductive time and eventually these factors will define the maximum length of horizontal section.Rotary-Percussion drilling can serve as a very successful method to extend horizontal wells with considerably lower WOB. By using hydraulic energy; the percussion action can be generated at almost any magnitude while it does not depend on the applied WOB. Therefore; it has the potential to increase ROP with limited WOB, which best suits horizontal wells. In this regard an innovative rotary-percussion drilling system was tested under CSIRO-petroleum supervision to evaluate initial improvement. ROP-Constant tests performed and results reveal that this system is able to maintain the same ROP with significantly lower WOB. Also WOB-Constant tests conducted and initial results show that this device can increase ROP up to two times while WOB is kept at a constant value. In this paper different sets of test are discussed where several combinations of impulsive force, blow per revolution, gap and depth of cut per revolution are analyzed and compared with the condition without impact. Issues regarding the hammer design are presented and precise guidelines for modeling outlined
