Abstract:
Metal/polymer/metal three-layer composites have exceptional properties such as excellent formability, improved mechanical properties, and special toughness. The use of these composite sheets is,however, limited due to the low bond strength between the metal skins and the polymeric core. In thisstudy, Aluminum۵۰۸۳/Polyurethane/Aluminum۵۰۸۳ three-layered sandwich sheets were produced byDirect Roll Bonding (without adhesive), through the cold rolling process. The influence of rollingspeed and thickness reduction on the bond strength of the sandwich sheet was studied. T-Peel anddouble-notch shear tests were performed to determine the normal and shear bond strength oflaminates. The results show that the highest bond strength was obtained at rolling speed and thicknessreduction of ۲۵rpm (round per minute) and ۳۰%, respectively. The mechanical properties of thelaminate sheet with most bonding strength were also obtained by Uniaxial Tensile test and comparedwith the monolithic aluminum sheets. Even though yield and ultimate strengths of the laminate werelower than the aluminum skin sheet, the total elongation of the three-layered laminate was higher thanthe monolithic skin sheet.
