Abstract:
The use of metacognitive strategies and metacognitive awareness is believed to greatly contribute to second language reading proficiency. Experimental research on this topic, however, presents mixed results. This meta-analysis reviewed research published between ۱۹۸۱ and ۲۰۲۰ that explored the effect of metacognitive awareness on second language reading in different settings. The purpose of the research was to calculate the average effect size for metacognitive awareness based on the currently-published research in this area. Search in the related literature revealed that at least ۵۰ studies had explored the issue. Screening these studies based on the research inclusion criteria finally rendered ۲۱ studies that were included in the meta-analysis. Effect sizes in the studies were recorded and an effect size calculator was used to determine size of the effect in studies that didn’t report the effect size. The results showed that based on the average effect size, metacognitive awareness significantly affects second language reading. The research setting was not an effective variable in determining the effect size.
