Abstract:

In ecolinguistics, a rather new branch of linguistics, linguists try to show that there is a logical link between language and thought or ideology. Thus, they try to take a practical step in solving the pollution crisis by studying language structures, language planning, language engineering and thus raising awareness in language speakers on how to treat and save the environment. The fact is that language of Persian poetry, compared to the standard language, impresses its addressees more strongly by virtue of its literary ornaments which foreground the language and promote its power of persuasion. Thus it can serve as a means to direct language speakers’ attention toward protecting the environment. This paper aimed at studying some of these ornaments in general, and metaphor and personification in particular in order to clarify the role of each in the development of a green language as a tool in solving the environmental pollution crisis. The results showed that the language of poetry particularly verses applying metaphor and personification serve as typical models of green language which can take an important part in preserving the natural environment.
