Abstract:

Introduction: A common framework for studies of smoking cessation is the Trans-theoretical model (TTM). Taking into account the high prevalence of smoking in men living in Fasa City-Iran, the present study was an attempt to determine the efficacy of TTM model on smoking cessation in men living in Fasa City, Iran, in ۲۰۱۶.Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study conducted on ۲۰۰ smokers in the age range of ۲۰-۵۰ years. Two clinics located in Fasa City were selected randomly; one clinic for the experimental group (N=۱۰۰) and one for the control group (N=۱۰۰). The data gathering tools consisted of five parts: general and demographical information; questions related to the construct of the stages of change model; assessment of behavioral and cognitive change processes effective on continuance of smoking or smoking cessation; Smoking self-efficacy questionnaire; evaluation of the outcomes of smoking; and assessment of the obstacles in the way of continual use of smoking, and smoking cessation. The courses consisted of eight sessions each ۵۵-۶۰min. After six months, data were collected once more by inviting the subjects to the clinics and asking them to fill out the questionnaires. Results: Linear regression showed that the stages of change in variables (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=۰.۷۸), pros (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=۰.۳۸), cons (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=۰.۲۱), the age of starting smoking (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=-۰.۱۸), experimental processes (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=۰.۱۳), and self-efficacy (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, R۲=۰.۱۲) were the predictors of smoking. Moreover, comparison of the control and experiment groups with regard to the change stages before and after the intervention did not show a significant difference between the two groups before the educational intervention (P-Value>۰.۰۰۱). However, we observed a significant difference between the two groups after the educational intervention (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱).Conclusion: The findings revealed the efficiency of the educational intervention, based on stages of change model, in the form of increase in the number of cessation smoking attempts.
