Prevalence of hookah concumption among Iranian male student

Introduction: Hookah smoking has increased worldwide, especially among young people and students. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hookah smoking in a sample of male students in Bushehr University in ۲۰۱۶.Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on ۹۷۷ students of Bushehr, south of Iran in ۲۰۱۶. Random multi-stage sampling was employed to select study participants.The our questionnaire was a self-administered including questions about hookah consumption in life time, last year and age of first use of hookah. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and SPSS version ۱۶ with Chi-square test.Results: The mean age of participants were ۲۱.۲۰±۲.۶۷ years. The lifetime, last-year and last-month prevalence of hookah use was ۳۱.۹%, ۲۲.۵% and ۱۴.۳% respectively. Also, the prevalence in boys was significantly higher than girls (P-Value<۰.۰۵). The results show that the mean age of the first time of use of hookah in male students who had a history of hookah consumption during their lifetime were ۱۶.۴۴±۲.۷۹ years.Conclusion: Our results showed that the prevalence of hookah consumption among male students in the present study is high. Considering the high rates of hookah consumption and also, related risk for theses students, using educational programs and preventive interventions are necessary for theses groups and their families.
