Abstract:

Introduction: Increasing rates of smoking and related complications is one of the most significant health concerns among youth. thus, identification of high-risk young individuals and patterns of smoking can be addressed as key elements for design and implementation of prevention and training interventions. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and pattern of smoking among nursing students of Hormozgan University of medical sciences in ۲۰۱۸.Method: A total of ۳۲۴ nursing students were recruited into this cross-sectional study. sampling was performed using multistage sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS version ۱۶.۰.Results: The mean age of the participants was ۲۲.۹۸±۳.۱۹ years. Of ۳۲۴ selected subjects, ۶۹% were males and ۲۹% were females. Results showed that ۷۰.۷% of the subjects had no history of smoking, ۲۹.۳% reported smoking one cigarette during their lifetime. Also, the mean age of smoking initiation at first puff and first whole cigarette were ۱۷.۲۰±۴.۲۲ and ۱۸.۲۸±۳.۴۱ years, respectively. Moreover, ۸۷.۳% of the subjects reported no smoking over the past month, ۴.۹% displayed daily smoking, ۳.۴% reported smoking less than daily, ۳.۱% reported smoking one to five times a week, and ۱.۲% reported smoking one to three times a month.Conclusions: The findings of this study reveal that the prevalence of smoking among nursing students of Bandar Abbas city was significantly higher and lower compared with other areas of Iran. Given the age at smoking initiation among these individuals, we suggest that effective training and prevention interventions should be established for these individuals.
