Abstract:

Todays, lithium-ion batteries have found wide applications due to their high energy density. Various issues of lithium-ion batteries such as cycle life, power, performance at different temperatures and safety are always considered in the selection of batteries for special applications. In this study, ۱۸۶۵۰ commercial batteries manufactured by Samsung, LG, Sony, Sanyo and Panasonic were evaluated for dimension, chemical and electrochemical matters. In design evaluation section, the batteries were dismantled and parameters such as electrode length, width, thickness and separator thickness were measured and recorded. In the chemical part, the chemical composition and crystal structure of the active material of the anode and cathode were determined by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Finally, for electrochemical testing, these batteries were subjected to cyclicity and rate-ability tests at different temperatures, as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among the batteries studied, batteries made by LG and specially the LG MJ۱ model battery showed the best performance in term of energy density, cyclic stability and cycle capability at rates above ۱۰ amps. Also, LG and Samsung batteries had the lowest impedance increase during the charge/discharge cycles among the other batteries studied.
