Abstract:
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems that possess the advantages of low cost and high energy density. Lithium-sulfur batteries have more energy than most batteries on the market and even their power is comparable to other batteries. Despite the fact that lithium-sulfur batteries have various advantages, the disadvantages such as poor utilization/cycling, low coulombic efficiency, loss of irreversible active materials, and degradation of cathode limit their applications. So, extensive studies have been conducted to improve the performance of these batteries components especially cathode design and electrolyte improvement which increase their capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive evaluation has been done for studying different aspects of lithium-sulfur batteries such as charge – discharge mechanism, advancements, challenges, and future prospects with emphasis on cathode and electrolyte sections
