Abstract:
Much is said and researched about project management and managing individual projects. The popular PMBOK and BOK models provide a framework for plan and control of single projects. However, further work is needed for evaluating, selecting and managing a portfolio of
small and large projects. Portfolio is a disciplined process for connecting strategy and multitude of projects.
Management by projects has become a way of life in project-based organizations, which need to compete on effectiveness, efficiency, and agility. The idea of project-based organizations may be further generalized into portfolio-based companies, which translate their strategies and business priorities or their continuing customer orders into a set of related projects and programs.
Portfolio Management is an organized framework to plan and implement strategic initiatives or customer assignments. It allows companies to organize and manage a group of nonhomogenous projects as a portfolio, and to provide a new management perspective on organization direction and performance. This paper discusses the overview aspects and several models.
