Abstract:

Background and Aim : Medicinal plants can be valuable therapeutic resources. The treatment ofinfections with plant-derived compounds is an age-old practice that is employed throughout theworld, especially in developing countries where traditional medicines are used to treat a variety ofdiseases. Interest in plants with antibacterial properties has been revived as a result of currentresistance profiles associated with over- and inappropriate use of antibiotics. The objective of thepresent study was to evaluate content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids and the antibacterialactivity of the seeds extracts of Polylophium involucratum (Pall.) Boiss. using spectrophotometricmethod. Methods : The seeds of Polylophium involucratum (Pall.) Boiss. were collected from Ramsar,Iran and hydroalcohlic extract prepared by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) method. Thentotal flavonoids and total phenolic content of methanolic extracts were determined by theAluminium Chloride Colorimetric and Folin-Ciocalteau method, respectivly. The antibacterialactivity was determined by (Disk Diffusion Method) against three strains of (Gram-positive andGram-negative) bacteria. Results : Our data showed total phenolic content of hydroalcohlic extracts of Polylophiuminvolucratum (Pall.) Boiss. seeds was ۱۲.۹۳±۲ mg GAE/g dry plant material. Also, total flavonoidcontent of hydroalcohlic extracts was ۷.۵۸±۷ mg QE/g dry plant material. The hydroalcohlicextract of seeds of Polylophium involucratum (Pall). Boiss. exhibited good antibacterial potentialagainst gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains. Conclusion : Therefore, Polylophium involucratum (Pall.) Boiss. Seeds, a natural source, in thepathway of developing a novel antibacterial agent able of treating bacterial infections, Also asource of important phytochemicals (mainly flavonoids and phenolic acids) with bioactiveproperties to be explored for pharmaceutical applications.
