Abstract:
The object of the study is to build a mathematical model that will be used to determine the value of the propulsions torque required to drive a human–wheelchair system under varied conditions. The position of the seat relative to the rear wheels is generally adjusted to modify the rearward stability of the wheelchair. Recent studies have shown that seat position also has an effect on propulsion biomechanics and suggest that seat position can be optimized.balance platform setup and anthropometric data were defined for use in determination of the center of gravity in the sagittal plane for a wheelchair and patient. Using the center of gravity (CG) information, measurements from the wheelchair and patient (weight, tire coefficients of friction), and some assumptions (constant speed, patient-wheelchair CG is constant), make a method for estimating the rolling resistance for a wheelchair. We used optimization analysis of variables to evaluate if differences existed in the temporal moment and kinetic data with change in seat position. Results shows that a shorter distance between the rear axle and shoulder (low seat height) reduced the forces & moments which is needed for propulsion
