The Technology and Challenges of Autonomous Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of computerengineering used for different applications aiming to makeintelligent systems. AI works and responds like humans,intelligently and independently through learning from experienceand adjusting to new participations. AI technology has trulystimulated the development and deployment of AutonomousVehicles (AV) in the transportation industry. Fueled by datafrom various sensing devices and advanced computing resources,AI has become an essential component of AV for perceiving thesurrounding environment and making the appropriate decisionin motion. To achieve the goal of full automation (self-driving), itis important to know how AI works in AV systems. Althoughthere has been remarkable progress in this domain, much needsto be accomplished. The adoption of AV technology has multiplebenefits. Autonomous car companies have spent a large numberof resources on the development of AV technology, intending tofully commercialize the technology. Several issues causehindrances to the achievement of this goal. These issues comprisetechnical, non-technical, and legal challenges. The future oftechnology is assuring and ambitious, however, the challengesmust be overcome. (Abstract)
