Background: There is no generally accepted standard radiological approach tomale breast diseases. Ultrasonography and mammography are the most preferredmethods for imaging. The purpose of this study is to investigate the diagnosticperformances of only single-view (mediolateral oblique) mammography androutine two-view mammography in the male breast diseases and also to evaluate thecontribution of ultrasonography to the diagnosis and the management of the disease. Methods: Three hundred-twenty male patients’ breast imaging findings wereevaluated retrospectively. Only mediolateral oblique and routine two-viewmammograms were re-evaluated four months apart by two breast radiologists. Thekappa value was calculated to measure consistency between two groups. Thesensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, and detectionaccuracy of malignancy were calculated for both mammographic examinations andultrasonography. Results: The accuracy of detection of malignant breast masses according tomediolateral oblique and two-view mammograms, and ultrasonography were ۹۶.۳%, ۹۷.۵ %, and ۹۹.۵ %, respectively. Consistency between single-view and twoviewmammograms was excellent (κ = ۰.۹۶۷) and statistically significant(p=۰.۰۰۰). Two-view mammograms did not make any contribution to single-viewmammograms.Conclusion: Only mediolateral oblique mammogram is sufficient in terms ofcharacterization, spread and localization of the lesion, as long as mastectomy ispreferred and the findings are supported by ultrasonography. Since there is nodiagnostic performance difference, only mediolateral oblique view would protectfrom the potential adverse effects of extra radiation exposure and this is animportant advantage.
