In this paper, vibration and damping analysis of thick cylindrical sandwich shell with electro-rheological (ER) core and graphene platelets reinforced composite (GPLRC) facing sheets based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is investigated. Different patterns of GPL distribution through the thickness of the facing sheet are assumed. Governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle and solved numerically using the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) for different boundary conditions. The present formulation is validated by comparing the numerical results with available literature. The effects of various parameters such as the electric fields, geometrically parameters, boundary conditions, and GPL distributions pattern on the fundamental natural frequency and modal loss factor are examined. The variation of the fundamental loss factor with variation in the length to radius ratio leads to the exciting graph called the mode switching phenomenon. The result of this study can help design intelligent structures for both military and civilian applications.
